Interested in flying airplanes? Interested in spiritually flying higher? Go ahead and sit back, relax, and enjoy this book.
Contained within are the first ten ‘pre-solo lessons’ that will put spiritual lift under your wings and help you to get faith airborne. Each chapter will open up and explain a new topic, such as grace, faith, Bible, prayer, church, money, ministry, and love.
Jim Walters is the pastor of Bear Valley Church in Lakewood, Colorado. Also a pilot, Jim Walters creatively and efficiently uses stories and concepts from aviation to explain the foundation for Christian living. Each of the 10 chapters -the lessons- concludes with a review quiz (answers included) and questions for group study. I enjoyed the way the biblical truths were presented and came away with some fresh insights. This is a great paper back book for an individual or small group.
The books ends with a look at the greatest commandment. We are reminded to love ourselves along with our love for God and others.
“There are no ordinary people” – C.S. Lewis.
English Standard Version (ESV)
27 And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”
Before concluding my review, there are two parts from the book that I need to mention.
The first is a quote. “Learning to walk with Jesus is not an individual sport” (p.128) This is the opposite. Everyone of us is on an individual walk with God.
The second is the answer to the question “Believers can address their prayers to God the Father, to Jesus, or to the Holy Spirit”. The book’s answer is yes but it should be no. In the Lord’s prayer, Jesus teaches His disciples to pray and He taught them to address the Father.
Jim Walters said that if he does an update of the book that it would include both those changes. These parts do not change my recommendation for this book. When Faith Takes Flight is a great book with much to offer.
