Classic Bible story with vibrant art and lyrical rhyming text from established and successful author Rhonda Gowler Greene.

“Ninety-eight…ninety-nine…” The faithful shepherd realizes that one of his one hundred sheep is missing and sets out to find it. In playful rhyme, prolific author Rhonda Gowler Greene retells Jesus’ parable of the lost sheep that loses its way on the mountain side. Under brambles, behind rocks, the shepherd looks until he finds it again. Children will delight in this fun and engaging tale illustrated by Margaret Spengler as they learn that God, like the faithful shepherd, will never let them stray.

Super cute picture storybook written by Rhonda Gowler Green, illustrated by Margaret Spengler, and published by Zonderkidz.

A good listen-to story for children ages 4-8 on the parable of Luke 15:3-4. Easy enough for beginner readers, too. I like the story’s flow with a bit of  rhyme and rhythm. The illustrations are soft and fuzzy looking (like a woolly sheep) with attention-keeping details such as cute emotions on the little sheep faces.

The point of the parable – God cares for you. He is earnest in bringing the “lost sheep” i.e., sinners, back to Him. He saves us and our redemption brings great joy.

Luke 15:3-4

So he told them this parable: “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it? (ESV)

Polar Bears - 1 John 3:18

Love expressed in words only can leave you feeling cold. Love expressed in deeds brings warmth and fulfillment.

What are Joyful ‘toons?

Joyful ‘toons are cartoons that are based on verses from the Bible. Each cartoon consists of a verse  and a cartoon illustration. It is my prayer that they be used to exhort and encourage Christians in their walk with the Lord, and also that they be used to reach out to those who don’t know Jesus as Lord and savior. joyfultoons.com/faq/

About the Cartoonist

I began drawing cartoons based on Bible verses in the 1990′s. I have always loved drawing cartoons, and one day the idea came to me for a cartoon that would illustrate the relationship between faith and grace. Not long after, an idea for a second cartoon came to me. I noticed that the back page of the weekly bulletin at my church was often blank, so I approached the pastor with the idea of using my cartoons to fill that space, and he agreed to my proposal. After that, ideas for other cartoons started coming to me, and they became a regular feature of the church bulletin. I then thought of sharing the cartoons, which by this time were called Joyful ‘toons. joyfultoons.com/about/

This Polar Bear Joyful ‘toon was created by Mike especially for my blog.

THANK YOU, Mike!

Joyful ‘toons are posted on Notes From Dawn with permission from Mike Waters.

Many bloggers share about their new year resolutions or their choosen word-of-the-year. I’ll join in and share my 2014 verse-of-the-year.

1 John 3:18

18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. (NIV)

022

Actions usually show the state of our hearts much better than our words

Love means we set aside some of our own wants to see to the wants of others

Love is an action word and there must be some evidence

Love rejects hatred

 Love requires sacrifice

Another art post (ARcTic post) that I’d like to share-

I want to offer ARcTic posts as a way to promote talented emerging and established artists and to share God’s word visually through art. The art that I will feature may or may not have been created from a Christian-minded artist. I want to share it here; to appreciate the work created as well as the talent that the artist demonstrates, always from a Christian perspective.

Sarah Mason is the talented artist and owner of Emetsigns . Her hand-made wooden signs consist of an assortment of different bible verses. Custom signs can be made with your choice of scripture and color. Emmetsigns beautifully showcases the Truth – God’s word. Sarah’s love for God’s word is lovely and I’m thankful to be featuring her art on today’s ARcTic post.

Romans 3 Distressed Wooden Scripture Sign

This oak sign is painted a light blue with the lettering done in white, gold, brown, and magenta. I like the cheerful colors for this particular verse. Paul is telling us that the Christian experience isn’t always easy. While that much we know,  I like to be reminded of what Paul tells us suffering can do for us; How God uses the difficult times to make us the Christians He wants us to be.

We suffer but learn to persevere. We persevere and through our trials and tests our character is shaped. Hope emerges. (Romans 5:3-5) We look to God, we trust Him, we believe he has no plans other than good plans for our lives. (Jer 29:11)

“For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.” Hebrews 4:12

How many times have you heard a scripture, but never “heard” the scripture. So often we hear or read our bibles with our head and somehow it misses the journey down to our hearts. Can you imagine what life would be like if we embraced the TRUTH that is present in God’s word, if we truly embraced Him. As Hebrews 4:12 states, the bible is not dead, or static, or outdated, it is ALIVE and full of TRUTH. It is life breathing and life giving and so often we choose to embrace the lies of this world over the truth of God.

As I am on this adventure called life, God is bringing me to new, deep places with Him that I have never known before, and it is all through this book we so often dismiss as irrelevant. He is giving me a passion for His word and His truth that I never knew was possible. Along the way He has encouraged me to seek out truth, emet, in every circumstance, and let me tell you, it is NOT an easy journey.

I am a very visual person, so for me, to have a visual reminder of the truth of God in the midst of a trial is very helpful to my heart. And that has led me here, to creating artwork to hang in homes that points us back to the truth. The truth that is sometimes hard to hear, but yet always true, that life is just not about me, i am called to love when it is hard, i am called to serve, God is everything and in everything, and I could go on and on. Along with each sign will come a short commentary on the verse and what it means for you and your family when you hang it in your home. My prayer is that this becomes more than just artwork in your home, but truly a place where God works to change hearts and bring us back to Him, the ultimate TRUTH.

Bud  uses reclaimed wire to create one-of-a-kind, handcrafted, three-dimensional sculptures. Similar to the technique of contour drawing, these wire sculptures are made as Bud uses wire -the line- controlling curves until it becomes a three-dimensional  sculpture. I love the sculpture that Bud created for Notes From Dawn!! Very cool.

What are you looking at Mr. Polar Bear?

Looking…with a Biblical worldview. It’s from a worldview that we derive an understanding, interpretation, and response to the world we live in. Just like the single wire was curved into a shape, bible verses were written for us by God to shape our thinking.

Here’s just a few verses that direct our understanding that the Christian faith is reasonable and makes sense in a world that has lost its direction.

Belief that God exists (Hebrews 11:6); He created everything that exists (Genesis 1:1) and everything is held together by Him (Colossians 1:17); mankind chose to rebel against God in the Garden of Eden and because of that act of rebellion, sin and death entered the world (Romans 5:12-14); and Jesus is the only way to have eternal life and be reunited with God (Acts 4:10-12)

P1060429A hard-to-photograph object but I still wanted to include this pic because I love the special look it gives to landscaping.

29282_822313m Artist’s Statement

All my life I have been an avid outdoors-man and storyteller, as an artist these two aspects of my character join together. I love to create art that shares my observations on the simple beauty of nature and the stories that come from time spent in the outdoors. My art is inspired by nature and reflects my great love for the world around me. It is important that my work not only relay the value I place on the natural world, but also is respectful to the environment in its production.

I up-cycle discarded wire into sculptures creating three-dimensional “drawings” that depict things that capture my imagination. Often these “drawings” are wildlife, insects, or plant life; but they could just as easily be a snowboarder or an old tractor. I enjoy making something of value from material that otherwise would end up in a landfill.

a few pics on a cloudy morning

In the C.S. Lewis story, an iron bar was thrown into Narnia by the witch and Aslan turned it into the lamp post.

In the book of Genesis, Joseph demonstrated the right attitude when faced with many trials. He knew God was in control and trusted Him. Joseph prospered as God turned that which was meant for evil into good.
