Round hooked mug rug, polar bear, approximately 5 in diameter, gift, stocking stuffer , cottage, ski house

Polar bear mug rug/ coaster. Handmade in Maine by Ellen Skea Marshall. I LOVE this!  Completely handmade, Ellen even hand dyed the blue for this piece. And this is her own created pattern.

I have identified as many things in my life. A daughter, a sister, a friend, a student, a teacher, a wife, a mother, but now, along with those things I am a fiber artist.

Living in the mountains of Western Maine, I am surrounded by beauty. Having lived in many parts of the country I have lots to draw upon when I sit down to draw, design, color plan and finally hook.

My mother’s mother, who was gone before I was born, was a rug hooker. My grandfather used to muse that he was afraid to leave home because his clothes would be turned into rugs while he was away. I am fortunate to have grown up walking on her rugs, not imagining at the time that I would be carrying on her tradition of hooking while giving it a modern twist with design elements and a use of fabrics that she didn’t have access to.

I love what I am doing now and hope that you will enjoy my designs, my work and want to stop by my ETSY shop and see the  patterns and finished pieces.

Please share this with others. The art of traditional rug hooking is making a comeback and it is very exciting to see. I am fortunate enough to be able to hook along side very talented women in Maine and continue this very important heritage craft.

Pinch Me

Charles Viancin

Review Update: I’ve since purchased a few other lids from Charles Vianin and sadly some have not passed the “pinch test”. (meaning it contains harmful fillers) 😦

February 2013 review: A good thing for your home and family! Easier to use than clingy plastic and cheaper over time, this lid is a “green” way to store, reheat, and present your food. It has great suction and seals tight to the top of my glass and stainless bowls. I have the 10″ lid and it works perfectly on several different size bowls. The hibiscus flower look is nature inspired and contemporary. In addition to reheating, storing and serving, I like to use of the lid while entertaining outdoors as an attractive way to cover food.

Maison Parfaite

The Maison Parfaite silicone steamer basket. Available on Amazon.

It’s also great for washing up just a few strawberries. And as a cushy protection for boiling eggs. Super easy to store. The Maison Parfaite claim: “You’ve found the ONLY 100% Silicone steamer basket on Amazon”.

This review follows the review I did for Piranha Fish, a company that also sells their 100% food grade silicone steamer baskets on Amazon.  FYI- the baskets from both these companies appear identical aside from the color. This item, as did the identical Piranha Fish steamer basket, passed my “pinch test”. (meaning it hopefully does not contain harmful fillers)

Piranha Fish

Piranha Fish Inc. is a brand new company that sells quality products on Amazon.com

Steamer Basket. 100% food grade silicone. One color option. Feet allow the basket to be about an inch high. Handles are useful for lifting out of a hot pot. I had been using a metal steamer- since forever- and prefer this silicone style. I also use the Piranha Fish steamer basket for quickly rinsing off (colander) small amounts of fruit. This item passed my “pinch test”. (meaning it hopefully does not contain harmful fillers)

Collapsible Lunch Box. One size. One color. Two compartments. This is a nice option for those needing a lunch box. We aren’t in the to-go lunch bunch, so we haven’t gotten to try this more than one time.

Earlywood

“a selection of heirloom-quality wooden kitchen utensils that are both highly-functional and beautiful.” I found it super easy to love Earlywood Designs. Functional. Beautiful. AND Sustainable.

At Earlywood, we know it is important to start at the beginning when determining the sustainability of any product. In most modern kitchens you will find an assortment of metal, rubber, plastic and silicone utensils.  Before those items showed up in your kitchen, the metal was mined, processed and melted, the rubber was polymerized and vulcanized, the plastic was processed from petroleum that was drilled, transported, refined, combined, and pelletized, and the silicone was synthesized.  Before your Earlywood utensils showed up in your kitchen, they were busy sequestering carbon, creating oxygen, reducing erosion, creating shade, housing birds and other animals, filtering water, cleaning air, reducing flooding, and generally looking good.

So your wooden utensils are off to a pretty good start, but at Earlywood, we don’t settle for pretty good. We know how valuable of a component trees are to our world.  That is why for every 1 tree that Earlywood uses to make products, we plant 100 to replace it.  We call it “100 to 1”. It is how we make sure that the forests that grow the woods we use end up healthier because of us.  Some of the trees we use grow in the tropical climates of Central and South America.  That is why we have chosen to plant our trees in the endangered Atlantic Rainforest of Brazil.  Visit http://www.plantabillion.org/ to learn more about the forest and the impressive efforts that are being made to save this vital piece of Brazil.

The Coffee Scoop

It holds 3 tablespoons. I use it as it’s named, for coffee beans, but it can be just as handy for other measurable pantry items, too. Leave it on the counter; no reason to put something this pretty away. This scoop made from hard maple.

The Trifecta
A flat saute, a scraper, and a spreader make up this group of all-you-need utensils. My son’s favorite is the scraper because of how it feels (weight and size). Choose your wood type. I appreciate the beauty of each one – jatoba, ebony, and maple.

the WOOD  The website is amazing, showcasing the different woods used in the Earlywood collection.  take a look

The Coin Laundry

Aprons, towels, and napkins for the kitchen. Onsies and tees for little people.

Shop this brand and enjoy vintage graphics. Love their eco efforts.

My review-

a Towel. The “Beat it” kitchen towel has a vintage hand beater image on a flour sack style towel. Measures 30″ by 30″. I use a flour sack towel cause they are lint free, quick drying, and useful for a multitude of household purposes.

a Tee. An acorn graphic with “I will be mighty” on a green tee. Sweet little shirt with a positive message!  Available in 2, 4, and 6T.

Beat it Kitchen Towel

I Will Be Mighty Toddler Kids Tee

both are 100% cotton and hand screen printed in Montana with earth friendly, water based inks and solvents.

my Two Cents. Knowing that conventional cotton uses a ton of pesticides, the better choice would be using organic cotton or bamboo.

Company Info

Our Fabric Tortilla Warmers are great not only for heating tortillas and keeping them warm, but for many other foods as well. Since 2005, La Tortilla Oven has pioneered the design of the fabric tortilla warmer. We have also successfully established our own brand “The Tortilla Oven” and slogan “Guaranteed to keep tortillas fresh and warm for over 1 hour!!” Even though there is no such thing as a Tortilla Oven, we are ecstatic to have introduced our own brand name with hopes that it will carry on for years to come. Our mission is to provide a simple working product at an affordable price for every home.
Simple kitchen helper- Heat tortillas directly in the warmer or (what I do) is put already heated tortillas into the warmer to keep warm. The Tortilla Warmer also keeps rolls, flat-breads (I’m a Naan fan), and pancakes warm, too.
They are available in two sizes- 10″ or 13″- and several different patterns.
10″ Singing Chili Peppers shown below.

DSCI0496

Example: Helpful when making fish tacos. (Bonefish Grill style Baja Fish Tacos with Mango Salsa and Chimichurri Sauce.)  After I pan warm my tortillas, I keep them warm in the Tortilla Warmer while I move on to cooking the fish and preparing the rest of the meal.

The Tortilla Warmers are 100% polyester with a plastic inner lining. Corporate offices are in California with products made in China. Of course, I’d rather this be made in the USA with Eco-friendly materials.

The Loving Kitchen. Downright Delicious Southern Recipes to Share with Family, Friends, and Neighbors

By LeAnn Rice

Published by Thomas Nelson

paperback, 272 pages

The Loving Kitchen is a collection of comforting recipes straight from the kitchen of popular food blogger LeAnn Rice.

You know the feeling you get when you’re an overnight guest in someone’s home, and you awaken to a hot-off-the-griddle breakfast? Or when a coworker brings in a pan of her famous brownies to celebrate your recent promotion? Doesn’t it feel great when dinner at the neighbors’ house includes multiple courses of scratch-made recipes and conversation that lingers beyond dessert and that last cup of coffee?

For many of us, these are the moments in which we feel most loved. That’s the idea behind The Loving Kitchen. Get your family’s day started right with LeAnn’s fluffy Pumpkin Spice Pancakes, or a bowl of Almond Coconut Granola and yogurt. Keep your favorite sports fans fueled through the entire game with hearty servings of Hot Sausage and Spinach Dip, or toss together a Grilled Chicken and Berry Salad for lunch with your dearest girlfriends.

Want a signature dinner you can serve on those special occasions? Stuffed Pork Tenderloin with Orange Cranberry Glaze with Creamy Smashed Baby Potatoes is the perfect meal to celebrate a milestone. LeAnn’s sunny narrative and ideas for bringing people together will remind you that the best meal you’ll ever cook is the one you prepare as an act of love.

The contents include: Morning Fare, Bountiful Breads, Starters and Salads, Entrees, Vegetables and Sides, Desserts, and Reaching Out and Gathering In. These are easy to make recipes with easy to find ingredients although it isn’t a “healthy eating” kind of cookbook. LeAnn includes a short remark before each recipe and I enjoyed her humor, insight, and inspiration.

A big must have with any cookbook is the photographs. This cookbook has them but they are not the best quality images. Overall, I give this book an A+ for author’s writing style/attitude, B for the variety of recipes, C for the nutrition aspect of the recipes, and a C- for the photographs.

BowlOvers

Its Description:

The idea for BowlOvers™ was born several years ago in the English countryside by Harriet Campbell, who disliked using cling wrap and for years had taken shower caps from hotels to put over bowls rather than use it. However, this solution wasn’t ideal, as Harriet really wanted to have something that could be washed and re-used over and over again. Putting the tea towels in the washing machine one day a light bulb came on and BowlOvers™ started their journey. Harriet made samples, spent a lot of time talking to friends, telling them she was going to develop the concept, but wondered how she could get her idea finally off the ground. One day, a friend suggested Harriet enter the Country Homes & Interiors Magazine “Rural Business Award” (UK edition), as apparently all the entries would get a short comment from the judges. She entered, and much to her delight and surprise, her BowlOvers™ were one of the runners up and the prize was several hours’ business consultation with a marketing firm. Their encouragement and professional advice was the final “piece of the pie” that helped Harriet to take her idea, and make it reality.

BowlOversare fast becoming a staple in every pantry, receiving great mentions in the press for this “very clever and jolly useful” way of resolving the issue of food wrap in an eco-friendly and convenient way.

The Facts:

Made from 100% cotton

Fits bowls sizes small 2-4″, medium 6-8″, large 8-10′, and salad days 12-14″

Each collection contains six covers, two of each size.

Available in five different collections

Machine washable and can be used over and over again

Convenient way to store leftovers in the fridge, cover dishes on counter-tops, bring to picnics or BBQ’s to keep flies at bay, place over dishes for the microwave, or to transport food to pot luck dinners!

Makes for a happier planet

My Review:

A wise Eco alternative to wasteful plastic wrap! The elastic edges allows it to fit snugly over my bowls. I use them mostly with round bowls but I have used them on a few square containers just the same. I don’t have a bowl for the smallest size cover but found it useful to cover drinks when outside. There is a paw print on this small size cover in the Original collection so it’s probably designed to be used for a pet food can. I’ve also used BowlOvers™ when making my Nut Rolls to keep the bread warm while it rises. They are a handy kitchen helper taking up very little storage space. And they would make for a thoughtful hostess or housewarming gift.
