Pitsco Education

Pitsco is a great resource for educational curriculum and hand-on kits for elementary and high school grades. Their products help students in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math. 

Since I support sustainable energy, I suggested my review for Pitsco be on the Homeschool Beginning Solar Vehicles Pack.

Their isn’t much information on the Pitsco website about this pack of three cars. But Amazon has a great description for the Ezoon solar car. 

Product Description

The Pitsco SunEzoon Solar Car is a hands-on project that includes all parts needed to build a solar-powered model car for use with students in grades 3-12 studying solar energy and physics concepts such as force, motion, speed, velocity, and acceleration. Each kit contains a 0.45V, 400 mA solar panel with alligator clamps, motor, motor mount, front and rear polyethylene wheels, steel axles, nylon axle bushings, polystyrene gear font (variety of gears), chassis plate, a cut-and-fold paper cover, double-sided adhesive tabs, and instructions. The finished solar car measures approximately 2.5 x 5 x 4 inches (H x W x D). (H is height, the vertical distance from lowest to highest point; W is width, the horizontal distance from left to right; D is depth, the horizontal distance from front to back.) A solar car kit is typically used to demonstrate solar energy and physics.

The SunEzoon solar car kit requires scissors and hobby knife or sandpaper (all sold separately) for construction. The kit can be used in conjunction with the Pitsco 59465 SunEzoon Cars Teacher’s Guide (sold separately).

Science education products incorporate applied math and science principles into classroom projects. Teachers in pre-K, elementary, and secondary classrooms use science education kits and products alongside science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) curriculum to demonstrate STEM concepts and real-world applications through hands-on activities. Science education projects include a broad range of activities, such as practical experiments in engineering, aeronautics, robotics, energy, chemistry, physics, biology, and geology.

A teacher guide for this kit is also available from Pitsco although my review is just for the kit. Building a kit is a great way to demonstrate the benefits and resources of green technology and construction. Overall, I would rate the kit as fair. Each of the three car packages contained a  “gear font” sheet. This is a paper description of the gears and a plastic punch-out sheet of gears. Not all the gears are used in the making of the kit, so I’m thinking it would be a lot more Eco friendly if only the gears needed were actually included. Didn’t like the unnecessary waste here. Assembly of the kit was easy to slightly difficult. Opinion could vary here based on age and skill. The kits themselves are not high quality but designed for instructional purposes. Basically, they are all inclusive since only a few other materials are needed for their assembly.

Results? They worked. But only in DIRECT sunlight. AND they need as easy surface to work on. No off-roading with these guys. Don’t expect them to be something they aren’t (can’t be steered). They are solar power cars you can build to see that sunlight can be harnessed. (yeah!)

You’re gonna love the Eco friendly, outdoor lighting options from 

Lovely both day and night, these solar lanterns will add a festive charm to your outdoor space this summer. Each lantern stores up free sun during the day and gives a wonderful glow at night.

My review comments – The three Soji™ lanterns I’ve reviewed all came in a flat box that I’ve saved for winter storage. The lanterns were super easy to assemble and each included a stainless steel hanging handle, a built in light sensor, one AAA rechargeable battery and a dual LED light. The Soji™ original also came with a base unit for table top use.

The lanterns are sizes 10×10 round, 7×15 oblong, and 5×7.5 cylinder and are made from a durable nylon. I usually try to rescue them from inclement weather; however, they have managed with a few storms no worse for wear.

The key to enjoying these is to remember that they need direct sunlight during daytime charging. They will not give lots of light. They are primarily decorative giving a bit of a down-light and a soft glow. Enjoy the ambiance!

Solar energy and rechargeable batteries are two environmentally friendly features that I love about this Solar Goose product.

This is the 7 LED Ultimate Emergency Kit.

This kit includes the Ultimate Solar Base Charger, Ultimate 7 LED Head, Ultimate 10 LED Flexible Tube Light, and the Ultimate Mobile Charger Kit.

The Ultimate Base Charger is the main component housing the solar panels. Just keep it in the sunlight to charge and it’s ready to go. Solar power is, of course, a renewable energy source. Free, too. The Base Charger also uses 2 AA Ni-Mh rechargeable batteries. Rechargeable batteries last a long time, saving you money. They keep more disposable batteries out of the landfill and are easy to recycle when they eventually run out.

I use the flashlight the most. (my “light saber”)

This is an environmentally friendly lighting and charging product. It is definitely useful for everyday lighting needs or during those dreadful power outages. In addition to using solar energy and rechargeable batteries, it uses bright, long lasting LED lights. The Base Charger’s end cap is magnetic servicing another useful, and fun, function. The Mobile Charge Kit includes 10 adapters. It doesn’t include an adapter for the iPhone but that can be purchased separately if needed. This is a nicely constructed product that helps you to go green and save energy.
